Quick Recovery Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation often improves the balance in a woman’s figure and can enhance her self-image and confidence.  Generally, this surgery is known as a cosmetic procedure to create a natural, fuller breast where volume is missing due to heredity, weight loss, or pregnancy.  However, breast augmentation can successfully be used for restorative purposes following a mastectomy, injury, or other cause.

This operation is designed to increase the size and fullness of the breast.  The exact size and shape of the breast after the operation cannot be guaranteed.  While trends often make one technique or another more popular, the size of the implant used is chosen by the surgeon after discussion with the patient, considering several factors.  The factors considered include the size of the chest wall, the patient’s height and weight, and the amount of breast tissue and the overall shape of the breasts already present.  All of these factors must be correlated with your personal desires for increasing the size of your breasts.  Dr. Williams will counsel you on his recommendations as to which size implant is the safest and best for you.  The final decision in the selection of size must be left to the surgeon.

Breast prostheses have been used for over twenty-five years and there is presently no evidence that this procedure or the implant has any bearing on the future development of breast cancer.

In most cases patients are able to nurse in the event of pregnancy.

A breast implant is place either beneath the breast tissue on top of the pectoralis muscle or beneath the pectoralis muscle on the anterior chest wall depending on your body type.  The prosthesis can be inserted through an incision on the under surface of the breast just above the crease where the breast meets the chest wall, through an incision around the areola of the nipple, or through an incision in the armpit.  The incision is approximately 1-2 inches long.  A surgical pocket is created on the chest wall either above or beneath the pectoralis muscle and the prosthesis is placed within this pocket.  The breast tissue lies over the prosthesis and the incision is closed in layers.

This operation may be done under general anesthesia or local with sedation, “twilight sleep”.  It is done on an out-patient basis and takes approximately two hours.
